We started showing in a small way in 1976 with a tricolour male Rough Collie with "Antoc"breeding. My my wife wanted a Shetland Sheepdog to show. so we bought a tricolour male. Around this time we bought a plot of land and built our house, which we live in today. So showing was put on hold for a few years. in those days it was normal to have 200 or more exhibits of Roughs at champ shows. We were having just limited success at this time. We were then very lucky to get, in payment for work I had for the owner of the Abbeywater kennels, the reknown CH. Abbeywater Faberge at Evad who won many CC’s and was B.O.B. at Crufts 1992 and was top stud dog for 3 years siring champions here and abroad.  My wife (Dot) was unlucky with the progress of our Shelties, so unknown to her I bought a black Briard bitch from the Abbeywater kennels, she was best puppy at Crufts and became a champion at the age of 3 years. We were advised to breed from a Sheltie bitch we had, to a stud dog, who lived in the north of England, who we had never seen. To our delight the resulting litter produced 2 champions 1 male and 1 bitch, both s/w, we kept the dog and sold the bitch for showing. Ch.Evad Summer Shadow won many CC’s and was also B.O.B. at Crufts and was top stud dog for many years, siring many champions here and abroad. He also holds the unique record of siring Best Dog. Best Bitch, And Best Puppy at Crufts on the same day. We later bough the litter sister back and made her up in 3 consecutive shows.

I started judging judging Roughs Collies in 1988 at open shows, getting my required number of dogs to award CC’s in 1997, CC’s in Briards in 1992 and Shelties in 2002. I now give CC’s in 9 breeds: 7 in the Pastoral Group (G1 in FCI) and 2 in the Working Group (G2 in FCI) with 3 more breeds hopefully to come soon.

What do I look for when judging?  Firstly I was taught by a top all rounder judge that breed type was the most inportant thing, with the correct outline for the breed and moves as close to the stardard as possible. In my view it is no good giving top honors to a Boxer, for example, who is a superb moving animal but has the head of a Bullmastiff. When awarding the top honors, this is difficult to explain, as this is an individual thing, it is something that comes back from the exhibit, that "fills the eye"on the day. First i like to see the profile of the dog, then the head in close up, and then how it stands front and rear, after  have gone over the dog to move it up and back in the ring, and then profile movement. I wll forgive a novice handler a little bit providing the dog has merit that I am looking for.
